The EPA has proposed a new set of boat emissions standards that could drastically affect the world's shipping fleets, forcing shipping companies to use more environmentally-friendly engine technologies.Under the two-part plan, the first stricter requirement would go into effect in 2011, and the second one would go into effect in 2016. The 2016 standard would require ships to produce 80 percent less emissions than the current standard.
